A leadership team is not a collection of impressive individuals. It is a system for making consequential decisions together. Team quality becomes visible in how conflict is processed, how evidence is weighed, how ownership is assigned and how quickly ambiguity becomes coordinated action.
Talent is necessary, not sufficient
Strong executives can still produce weak team performance when mandates overlap, decision rights are unclear or incentives reward functional success at the expense of enterprise outcomes.
What to assess
Search and succession decisions should consider how a leader changes the behavior of the team around them: whether they clarify choices, elevate evidence, develop other leaders and create trust without avoiding necessary tension.
The question is not only whether the executive can perform. It is whether the leadership system becomes stronger because they are in it.
